An exciting career awaits you at ASC, Australia's submarine company - the sustainer of Australia's conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines in the AUKUS partnership. To deliver on this new and exciting work, we are seeking skilled trades individuals to undertake world-leading training in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, U.S.  

Placements are available in August 2026 and will be 6 months in duration, followed by permanent employment in Garden Island, Perth. 

 

Responsibilities 

In the role of a Gas Tester (Atmospheric Monitoring Technician), you are responsible for ensuring the safety in confined spaces within shipyards and naval vessels before a hazardous activity is taken place. This role will conduct atmospheric testing and other hazard identification procedures to ensure an area is safe for work.

  • Evaluate confined spaces within ships and shipyards to recognize hazards such as flammable gases, oxygen deficiency, or toxic substances.  
  • Perform atmospheric testing to determine if a space is safe for entry or hot work.  
  • Issue required gas-free certificates to permit work in previous hazardous areas.
  • Provide technical expertise on hazard control to other personnel

 

 Eligibility Criteria 

The successful applicant must possess:  

  • Previous experience working in confined space and familiarity with hazardous areas.
  • Completed course in Gas Test Atmospheres
  • Australian Citizenship  
  • An ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 defence clearance  
  • Ability to complete training in Hawaii, US followed by permanent relocation to Perth, WA.

 

Additional Details 

During deployment, you will receive on the job training combined with instructor led classroom training. This training program and work is carried out in accordance with company and US Navy processes and procedures.  

At the completion of your deployment, you will return to Western Australia (WA) to carry out the planning, management, and in-water maintenance activities on the United States Navy Virginia Class Submarines. Repatriation to WA is non-negotiable, so please consider this when applying.  

Please note: This is a Civilian role and recruitment processes will differ from those undertaken in Active Service Defence recruitment.
