ASC is Australia’s submarine company. We built the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines, sustain them, and are now delivering their Life of Type Extension to increase the boats’ service lives. About the Opportunity
Based in Osborne, South Australia and reporting to the General Manager – Nuclear Readiness, the Work Health, Safety and Environment (WHSE) Manager is responsible for leading all health, safety and environmental aspects of the SSN-AUKUS Build Program, with a strong focus on environmental stewardship.
A degree of flexibility in working hours is required to support engagement with Joint Partners across international time zones. The role may also involve periodic or regular international travel. This position operates within a transitional structure and is subject to change in line with the maturity of partnership arrangements with BAE Systems.
Responsibilities
- Set and execute WHSE strategy aligned to ASC objectives, with clear goals, strong performance delivery, and industry-leading standards embedded across the SSN‑AUKUS Build program.
- Drive collaboration and stakeholder alignment by building trusted relationships, enabling coordinated delivery, and ensuring WHSE strategies support broader program priorities and outcomes.
- Proactively manage risk and performance through early identification and mitigation of WHSE risks, robust monitoring and reporting, and effective budget management to sustain a strong safety culture.
- Strengthen stakeholder engagement and leadership capability by embedding consistent WHSE processes and assurance practices, providing strategic advice to executives, and proactively managing risks, issues, and opportunities to enable aligned, informed decision-making.
- Establish and maintain robust WHSE governance and compliance by delivering accurate and timely reporting, ensuring audit readiness, maintaining licences, and meeting all regulatory and ASC requirements.
- Develop and embed effective WHSE frameworks and risk management practices by providing clear guidance to stakeholders, ensuring consistent application across the organisation, and proactively identifying, mitigating, and managing risks to support strong program outcomes.
- Drive performance and alignment by setting clear expectations, communicating strategy and goals, and managing to outcomes with strong role clarity, ensuring employees understand success and consistently deliver against organisational priorities.
- Build a high-performing, engaged team by fostering a culture of recognition, innovation, and accountability; identifying and developing talent through performance reviews, coaching, and providing opportunities and tools for continuous professional growth.
About you
- Deep expertise in Australian Workplace Health & Safety legislation, standards, and risk management practices, with proven ability to apply them effectively.
- Strong leadership experience in health and safety systems within defence, infrastructure, or construction environments, including managing multi-disciplinary teams and complex stakeholders.
- Demonstrated capability to identify, manage, and mitigate current and future risks to ensure the safety of employees and contractors.
- Experience establishing or integrating safety management systems, combined with a consultative leadership style that drives cultural and behavioural change through coaching and mentoring.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence, collaborate, and deliver complex WHSE system initiatives in dynamic environments.
- Highly organised professional with strong communication, time management, and practical operational insight to contribute effectively to technical and non-technical matters
Eligibility
This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance up to an NV1 level. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.
