ASC is Australia’s submarine company. We built the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines, sustain them, and are now delivering their Life of Type Extension to increase the boats’ service lives. We have also been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines – the largest and most complex industrial undertaking in Australia’s history.

Our work is interesting and meaningful, contributing directly to Australia’s national security. We offer rewarding roles that provide the opportunity to grow your career, and the flexibility to balance life and work. A career at ASC is like no other, delivering a deeper purpose we can all be proud of.

About the Opportunity
We’re seeking an experienced Manager, Nuclear Fluid Systems and Mechanical Engineering to lead ASC’s nuclear fluids and mechanical engineering capability within the SSN Sustainment Program. Reporting to the Head of Nuclear Engineering, you’ll develop and guide a team responsible for nuclear fluid systems, mechanical engineering systems, and maintenance activities on submarines at SRF‑West. This is a critical leadership role focused on improving nuclear maintenance processes, ensuring engineering excellence, and supporting safe, compliant delivery across high‑risk submarine sustainment operations

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance, direction, and review for engineering staff developing nuclear maintenance documentation and system solutions.
  • Drive improvements to nuclear maintenance processes, procedures, and engineering practices.
  • Deliver expert support across nuclear systems, components, and facilities work, including nuclear fluids systems and mechanical components.
  • Interpret requirements and resolve technical queries for project teams and radiological controls personnel.
  • Lead development and execution of the Nuclear Fluid Systems and Mechanical Engineering strategy to support SSN Sustainment objectives.
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships across government, defence, Ship’s Force personnel, and internal assurance groups.
  • Manage risks, resources, and priorities to ensure high‑quality engineering outcomes.
  • Develop and lead your team through clear expectations, coaching, performance management, and fostering a culture of innovation and accountability.

About you

  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (Master’s preferred).
  • Chartered Engineer status (or the ability to obtain it quickly).
  • Comfortable working in environments with hazardous materials, radiation, heat, dust, fumes, and confined or poorly ventilated spaces, and willing to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • More than 10 years’ experience in naval or nuclear engineering, ideally including reactor plant repair methods, radiological evaluation, nuclear maintenance, hazardous material management, radiological containment design, and nuclear valve systems.
  • Strong leadership capability with experience guiding technical teams in high‑risk, highly regulated environments.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance, an Australian Defence Security Clearance and an ability to access protected US defence technology. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances and approvals.

Whilst ASC will accept all applications for this role, as this role requires an ability to access protected US defence technology, applicants holding nationality of certain foreign countries will not be eligible.

Benefits

  • Unique and challenging work with a deeper purpose.
  • Flexibility over how, when and where you work for the best work/life balance.
  • Up to 10 days additional leave every year so you can rest and recharge.
  • Generous parental leave so you can give your family the focus it deserves.
  • Subsidised childcare to ease the financial pressure on your family.
  • Health and wellbeing initiatives so you can perform at your best at work.
  • Professional development opportunities to advance your career.
  • A diverse and supportive environment where you can thrive.
  • Discounts and exclusive offers from leading Australian brands to help you save.
