An exciting career awaits you at ASC, Australia's submarine company - the sustainer of Australia's conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines in the AUKUS partnership. To deliver on this new and exciting work, we are seeking a skilled Quality Inspector (Mechanical) to undertake long-term, world-leading training in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, U.S.  

Placements are available in September 2026 and will be approximately 25-months in duration. 

 

Responsibilities  

As a Quality Inspector – Mechanical, you will: 

  • Apply technical references, inspection standards, specifications, blueprints, schematics, and diagrams to assess work quality and compliance  

  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections on complex components, assemblies, and systems in shop and shipboard environments  

  • Witness and document testing activities, including strength, tightness, and operational testing of components, equipment, and systems  

  • Conduct pre‑arrival and pre‑overhaul inspections to identify existing conditions, deficiencies, and discrepancies and assist in defining work scope  

  • Carry out in‑process inspections during removal, repair, assembly, and installation activities to ensure conformance with dimensional, cleanliness, material, welding, and alignment requirements  

  • Use specialised inspection and measuring equipment (e.g. gauges, micrometres, callipers, indicators, hardness testers, surface finish analysers) to verify compliance with technical and quality standards 

 

Eligibility Criteria  

The successful applicant must possess:  

  • Certificate III in a Mechanical Trade (e.g. Fitter & Turner or Mechanical Tradesperson), or equivalent demonstrated experience 

  • Demonstrated inspection or quality assurance experience aligned to mechanical work 

  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, and standards  

  • Experience conducting visual and dimensional inspections using precision measurement tools  

  • Understanding of inspection hold points, documentation requirements, and safe working practices in controlled environments 

  • Australian Citizenship  

  • An ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 defence clearance 

 

Additional Details 

During deployment, you will receive on the job training combined with instructor led classroom training. This training program and work is carried out in accordance with company and US Navy processes and procedures.  

At the completion of your deployment, you will return to Western Australia (WA) to carry out the planning, management, and in-water maintenance activities on the United States Navy Virginia Class Submarines. Repatriation to WA is non-negotiable, so please consider this when applying.  

Whilst ASC will accept all applications for this role, as this role requires an ability to access protected US defence technology, applicants holding nationality of certain foreign countries will not be eligible.
