ASC is Australia’s submarine company. We built the Royal Australian Navy’s Collins Class submarines, sustain them, and are now delivering their Life of Type Extension to increase the boats’ service lives. We have also been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build the nation’s nuclear-powered submarines – the largest and most complex industrial undertaking in Australia’s history.

Our work is interesting and meaningful, contributing directly to Australia’s national security. We offer rewarding roles that provide the opportunity to grow your career, and the flexibility to balance life and work. A career at ASC is like no other, delivering a deeper purpose we can all be proud of.

About the Opportunity

The signatures team is responsible for understanding and maintaining submarine signature for the CCSM, a key aspect to the survivability of the platform. As a Specialist Signatures Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the acoustic performance of Australia’s submarine fleet. Reporting to the Signatures Manager, you will apply engineering principles in acoustics, noise, and vibration to analyse, manage, and optimise submarine signatures across ASC’s sustainment, upgrades and updates, and Life of Type Extension programs.

This position offers the opportunity to work at the cutting-edge of noise, vibration and acoustics engineering — applying signal processing, acoustics, vibration analysis, and structural dynamics expertise to solve complex, real-world challenges. You will collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering teams, as well as Defence stakeholders and external partners, to deliver solutions that directly influence Australia’s naval capability.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist advice and direction on submarine signatures performance, noise and vibration analysis and design of equipment.
  • Perform calculations and modelling ranging from analytical to numerical techniques.
  • Perform noise and vibration data collection, testing, analysis and reporting. This may include the assessment of system and equipment performance by trials at ASC, at equipment supplier’s premises and on-board submarines at sea.
  • Develop, or assist in the development of documentation such as drawings, specifications, test and trials procedures (including safety assessments), concessions, engineering reports and work instructions.
  • Investigate signatures defects and problems reported from submarines in service. Develop remedial and corrective designs and actions to overcome and prevent re-occurrence of these defects.
  • Review or approve engineering solutions within your delegated Engineering Authority.
  • Contribute to the CCSM life of type extension, update and upgrade of systems, and in service support of the fleet.
  • Provide signatures engineering advice to management and to other ASC departments as tasked.

About you

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering or Science, with significant experience (10+ years) in acoustics, noise, or vibration disciplines.
  • Experience in acoustics, noise and vibration control of machinery systems in the defence, marine or industrial environment.
  • Understanding of underwater acoustics modelling and behaviour
  • Acoustic design within buildings and infrastructure, architectural and environmental contexts is desirable
  • Knowledgeable in vibration isolation and control within buildings and infrastructure, architectural and environmental contexts is desirable
  • Experience with signature and/or noise and vibration measurement equipment and analysis tools (such as Bruel and Kjaer PULSE, and modal analysis techniques) is desirable.
  • Exposure to various engineering modelling tools and software packages such as Finite Element and Boundary Element models, Matlab, Python, LabView etc. is desirable.
  • Ability to recognise and set appropriate priorities and work standards.
