An exciting career awaits you at ASC. We built Australia’s Collins Class submarines, sustain the Collins Class fleet, and have been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines in Australia. 

To deliver on this new work, ASC are seeking experienced Welding and Materials Engineer to live, work and learn about building nuclear-powered submarines in Barrow, United Kingdom (UK).

Initial placements are available in September 2025 and will be 24 months in duration. Applications may also be considered for future deployment opportunities.

 

Responsibilities 

As a Welding and Materials Engineer, you will:

  • Provide technical direction throughout the lifecycle of design projects, ensuring adherence to specifications, sketches, test procedures, and engineering reports
  • Develop and review technical specifications for welding processes and equipment, ensuring compliance with relevant welding codes and best practice
  • Conduct technical reviews and quality assessments of and provide detailed reports on welding activities and equipment
  • Participate in the procurement process by evaluating suppliers, conducting design reviews, and supporting factory and site acceptance testing
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to the engineering team and other stakeholders to support manufacturing processes
  • Develop and implement welding test procedures for verification and validation of requirements
  • Contribute to risk and opportunity management workshops related to welding activities

 

Eligibility Criteria 

The successful applicant must possess: 

  • Australian Citizenship 
  • Certificate III in Fabrication OR a Bachelor of Engineering (Materials, Naval architect, Structural or Mechanical preferably)
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience
  • Eligible for membership status with the Institution of Engineers Australia
  • Experience within Defence (desirable and highly regarded)
  • An ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 defence clearance 

 

Additional Details

Once deployed, you will be immersed into the processes and procedures ultimately required to construct the SSN-AUKUS submarines in Australia. You will receive a tailored development plan, giving you exposure to world-class submarine programs, and informed of specific rotations you will complete whilst in Barrow to further enhance your capabilities in submarine design and build. 

At the completion of your deployment, you will return to South Australia (SA) to carry out build activities on the SSN-AUKUS Submarines at the Osborne Shipyard. Repatriation to SA is non-negotiable, so please consider this when applying. 

Please note: This is a Civilian role and recruitment processes will differ from those undertaken in Active Service Defence recruitment.
