About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Nuclear Chief Test Engineer, the Nuclear Testing - Work Package Lead is responsible for the leadership, coordination and oversight of nuclear testing activities in support of Submarine Rotational Force - West (SRF-W). Leading a team of Shift Test Engineers, you will oversee day-to-day waterfront testing operations, work control activities and the execution of Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) test programs, ensuring activities are conducted safely, compliantly and in accordance with approved procedures.

You will play a critical role in supporting reactor and propulsion plant safety by identifying work release and retest requirements associated with nuclear work, coordinating testing and maintenance activities, and providing expert technical guidance to engineering and operational stakeholders. Acting on behalf of the US Nuclear Chief Test Engineer when required, you will support the planning and implementation of submarine maintenance activities while ensuring testing outcomes meet quality, safety and schedule requirements.

The role also contributes to ASC's long-term sovereign nuclear capability objectives. Supporting the development of Australia's nuclear test engineering program through the establishment of engineering governance, training programs, testing documentation and maintenance practices. This role works closely with AU and international stakeholders, including the US Navy, HMAS Stirling departments and naval crews, you will help enable the safe and effective sustainment of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a team of Shift Test Engineers, ensuring the safe and effective planning, execution and close-out of nuclear testing activities that support reactor plant maintenance through SRF-W.
  • Oversee waterfront testing operations, work control activities and Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) test programs, ensuring compliance with approved procedures, safety controls, quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide expert nuclear engineering advice and technical leadership, resolving complex engineering issues and supporting informed decision-making across ASC, US Navy and maintenance stakeholders.
  • Coordinate testing and maintenance activities with HMAS Stirling departments, naval crews, government stakeholders and US Lead Maintenance Activity (LMA) organisations to achieve successful operational outcomes.
  • Support the development of Australia's sovereign nuclear test engineering capability through the establishment of engineering governance, training programs, testing documentation and maintenance practices.
  • Drive workforce capability and continuous improvement by developing engineering personnel, strengthening professional standards and fostering a culture of safety, accountability and technical excellence.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering or a related technical discipline, with significant experience in nuclear engineering, testing, maintenance or operations within a highly regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams and delivering complex engineering activities in safety-critical industries.
  • Strong understanding of engineering governance, maintenance execution, testing processes and operational risk management.
  • Proven ability to provide sound engineering judgement, solve complex technical problems and communicate effectively with military, government and industry stakeholders.
  • Experience contributing to workforce capability development, technical training programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Commitment to the highest standards of safety, quality, regulatory compliance and professional excellence.

Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance, an NV1 Australian Defence Security Clearance and an ability to access protected US defence technology. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances and approvals.
