About the Opportunity

As Lead Mechanical Engineer, based out at Osborne South Australia, you will be responsible for delivering technically sound design solutions for small to medium mechanical sustainment (DMDR) projects within the Update & Upgrade Engineering team.

This permanent, full-time role will provide you the opportunity to work in a multi-discipline project team to remediate obsolescence, reliability, and capability issues for the Royal Australian Navy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for design projects relating to obsolescence, reliability, and capability development on mechanical systems for the Collins Class Submarine.
  • Develop project plans to deliver the required engineering solution in-line with design processes to meet the needs of the customer.
  • Produce safety and technical risk assessments in accordance with the Defence Seaworthiness Management System.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation including specifications, drawings, analyses, test procedures, and reports.
  • Lead engineering tasks and projects (no direct reports) of basic to intermediate complexity, including schedule integration, risk management, and earned value reporting.
  • Apply Systems Engineering methodologies across the full engineering lifecycle.

About You

  • (Required) Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace or similar) which satisfies the membership requirements for the Institution of Engineers Australia (MIEAust or higher).
  • Design engineering experience utilising the Systems Engineering methodology.
  • Minimum 3 years of Mechanical Engineering experience (ideally in a similar defence environment but open to other industries) with the ability to move up into this Lead role.
  • Understanding of ALARP or SFARP risk management practices.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and work with a multi-discipline team of engineers, and technical personnel.
  • Experience with working through integration issues with stakeholders to find acceptable solutions.
  • An understanding of subcontractor engagement including engineering service providers and equipment procurement.  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.   
  • Desirable areas of knowledge include submarine design, system design, hydraulics, compressed air, fluid mechanics, HVAC, thermodynamics, and materials.

Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance to a NV1 level. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances.
