To deliver on this new and exciting work, we are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to undertake long-term, world-leading training in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, U.S.

Placements are available in September 2025 and will be approximately 116 weeks in duration. 

 

Responsibilities  

As a Mechanical Engineer specialising in Fluid Systems, you will typically be responsible for: 

  • Over-haul, repair, and alteration of naval mechanical ships’ systems such as piping systems, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation and atmospheric habitability, hydraulics and propulsion systems 

  • Investigating, reviewing and studying drawings, precedent calculations, specifications and guidelines to evaluate data for compliance with technical, operational, and safety requirements and established design standards 

  • Studying layouts of systems and components to determine feasibility of arrangement; compliance with technical, operational, maintenance and safety requirements; and predictability within pertinent limitations of production methods, design time, funds, material availability 

  • Investigating and writing reports to develop solutions to problems on new and existing systems and components 

  • Conducting investigations and prepare reports and recommendations on engineering problems covering mechanical systems aboard surface ships and submarines 

 

Eligibility Criteria  

The successful applicant must possess:  

  • Australian Citizenship  

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) – minimum qualification requirement 

  • 1-5 years' experience (desirable) 

  • Experience within the defence industry or on submarines (desirable) 

  • Specialisation and understanding of Fluid Systems 

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 defence clearance  

 

Additional Details 

During deployment, you will receive on the job training combined with instructor led classroom training. This training program and work is carried out in accordance with company and US Navy processes and procedures.  

At the completion of your deployment, you will return to Western Australia (WA) to carry out the planning, management, and in-water maintenance activities on the United States Navy Virginia Class Submarines at HMAS Stirling. Repatriation to WA is non-negotiable, so please consider this when applying.  

Please note: This is a Civilian role and recruitment processes will differ from those undertaken in Active Service Defence recruitment.
