About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Specialist Mechanical Engineer to provide senior technical leadership, expert engineering judgement, and mentoring across complex and safety-critical engineering activities. This role plays a key part in the design, sustainment, and certification of submarine systems, including SUBSAFE and other critical systems, and requires a strong ability to balance technical excellence with schedule and cost considerations.
You will work with a high degree of independence, act as an Engineering Authority where required, and collaborate across engineering, project management, production, and external stakeholder groups to deliver safe, practical, and implementable engineering outcomes.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Provide specialist engineering expertise across multiple domains, including complex and safety-critical systems
- Lead and mentor multi-disciplinary engineering teams, fostering technical capability and professional development
- Act as Engineering Authority (EDA / CAP where applicable), reviewing and approving engineering artefacts
- Lead highly complex engineering tasks and projects, including schedule integration, risk management, and earned value reporting
- Apply Systems Engineering methodologies across the full engineering lifecycle
- Design new systems and undertake significant system and sub-system redesigns
- Prepare and review engineering documentation including specifications, drawings, analyses, test procedures, and reports
- Provide technical advice to senior management and customers, including formal presentations
- Manage and mitigate technical risks and opportunities, ensuring alignment with Defence Seaworthiness requirements
- Contribute to continuous improvement, development of engineering processes, and toolsets
About You
- You are a senior engineer with deep technical expertise, strong leadership capability, and a proven ability to solve highly complex problems in a structured and pragmatic way. You are confident operating at authority level, influencing stakeholders, and delivering outcomes in safety-critical, regulated environments.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Engineering degree meeting Engineers Australia requirements (MIEAust or equivalent)
- Advanced experience leading complex, multi-dimensional engineering projects
- Strong background in submarine systems, sustainment, and certification environments
- Excellent knowledge of SUBSAFE, Defence Seaworthiness, SFARP, and submarine safety processes
- Proven capability applying Systems Engineering methodologies at system level and being able to tailor appropriately depending on project complexity
- Demonstrated technical leadership of multi-disciplinary engineering teams
- High-level proficiency with engineering toolsets and technical documentation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience delivering projects through the full design lifecycle from initiation to implementation
- Eligible for Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) membership
- Eligible for Australian Defence security clearance and ITAR compliance
Eligibility
This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance to a NV1 level. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances.
