To deliver on this new and exciting work, we are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer (Nuclear and Fluid Systems) to undertake long-term, world-leading training in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, U.S.

Placements are available in July 2025 and will be approximately 90 weeks in duration. 

 

Responsibilities  

As a Mechanical Engineer (Nuclear), specialising in Fluid Systems, you will typically be responsible for:  

  • Exercising technical control over the shipyard to provide optimum effectiveness, safety and economy of the submarine propulsion plant 

  • Acting as a “shift engineer” to provide technical direction during periods when shipyard production activities are engaged in work which might affect the propulsion plants 

  • Providing engineering support to the supply program for the procurement, inspection, and acceptance of critical nuclear reactor plant equipment and materials 

  • Ensuring that the Nuclear Power Manual chapter is in the conformance with the latest requirements of NAVSEA, Military Specifications, technical manuals, instructions, policies, plans and procedures 

  • Performing the advance technical planning functions necessary to prepare the shipyard for forthcoming restricted availability, voyage repair, technical availability, and regular overhaul work 

 

Eligibility Criteria  

The successful applicant must possess:  

  • Australian Citizenship  

  • Minimum Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) 

  • 1-5 years' experience (desirable) 

  • Experience within the defence industry or on submarines (desirable) 

  • Post Graduate Nuclear studies (desirable) 

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a NV1 defence clearance  

 

Additional Details 

During deployment, you will receive on the job training combined with instructor led classroom training. This training program and work is carried out in accordance with company and US Navy processes and procedures.  

At the completion of your deployment, you will return to Western Australia (WA) to carry out the planning, management, and in-water maintenance activities on the United States Navy Virginia Class Submarines at HMAS Stirling. Repatriation to WA is non-negotiable, so please consider this when applying.  

Please note: This is a Civilian role and recruitment processes will differ from those undertaken in Active Service Defence recruitment.
