About the Opportunity

Internally known as the Radiological Controls Advisor, this role serves as a subject matter expert on radiation safety and protection principles for the safe handling, processing, storage, and analysis of radioactive materials including  radioactive waste and sources, radiation detection, facility requirements, tools and processes.  This role supports the development of the corporate ASC’s policies, management systems, and training programs required to ensure compliance with Australian regulations, customer expectations, and standards.

Working closely with the Radiological Control Arrangements Manager, the Advisor ensures program specific requirements align with regulatory and corporate frameworks. The role also involves engaging with internal and external stakeholders to communicate safety priorities and foster collaboration.

Multiple full-time positions available, based from either ASC's site in Osborne, SA or Henderson, WA. 

Responsibilities

  • Support the Radiological Control Arrangements Manager, and wider Nuclear & Capability Department to develop and deliver ASC’s nuclear and radiation safety requirements to ensure compliance with relevant licenses, legislation, and standards
  • Develop ASC’s radiation safety governance framework and support the development of the required documentation suite.
  • Provide subject matter expert support to the relevant programs regarding expected operational processes, facility designs, capability and equipment requirements.  
  • Support the develop and delivery of training materials and general advocacy for radiation safety and nuclear materials management awareness
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to effectively coordinate and manage program outcomes.  

About you 

  • Tertiary qualifications at Bachelor degree level or above in a relevant nuclear or radiation science course; or significant operational experience in a nuclear or radiological industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide guidance on the safe use, management, handling, processing, and storage of nuclear or radioactive material in line with Australian regulatory requirements and international best practice
  • Technical experience in radiation detection techniques including surveying area and personnel surveying and radiochemical analysis using specialised equipment.
  • Ability to communicate complex radiological hazards in an understandable way, highlighting the risk to human health and environment
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations governing the use, handling and storage, of nuclear materials and radioactive sources
  • Ability to interpret and apply radiological or nuclear legislation into practice/operations and develop supporting policies or processes
  • Familiarity with international best practices and standards, and national standards for managing radioactive material, ensuring compliance with safety and security protocols
  • Skills in educating various audience about the harmful effects of ionising radiation and promoting safe practices in handling and storing radioactive material

Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance, an Australian Defence Security Clearance and an ability to access protected US defence technology. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances and approvals.

Whilst ASC will accept all applications for this role, as this role requires an ability to access protected US defence technology, applicants holding nationality of certain foreign countries will not be eligible.
