About the Opportunity

We’re seeking a detail‑driven SUBSAFE Assurance Engineer / Officer to support ASC’s SUBSAFE Surveillance Program. Reporting to the SUBSAFE Surveillance Manager, this role is responsible for planning, executing and reporting on audit and assurance activities to ensure compliance with naval, defence and quality standards.

You will operate at the intersection of engineering, production and governance, providing independent assurance that systems, processes and products meet stringent SUBSAFE and certification requirements. This is a critical role that contributes directly to submarine safety, operational readiness and certification outcomes within a highly regulated and high‑consequence environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver audit and surveillance activities across systems, processes and products.
  • Ensure compliance with SUBSAFE requirements, NAVSEA standards, ISO frameworks and defence specifications.
  • Lead root cause analysis investigations and drive corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, procurement and supplier teams to embed quality requirements.
  • Monitor corrective action requests and support timely resolution of non‑conformances.
  • Conduct compliance reviews, trend analysis and assurance reporting to support governance activities.
  • Contribute to certification readiness through provision of compliance evidence and audit support.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality, safety and process efficiency.
  • Maintain strong stakeholder relationships while providing independent assurance insights.

About you 

  • Degree‑qualified engineer in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems or a related defence/shipbuilding experience.
  • Qualified Lead Auditor with experience across ISO standards such as ISO9001, ISO14001 or ISO45001.
  • Experience in quality assurance, compliance or auditing within defence, maritime or complex manufacturing environments.
  • Strong understanding of quality systems, risk management and engineering governance.
  • Proven capability in audits, investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • High attention to detail with a strong focus on compliance, traceability and documentation integrity.
  • Experience in submarine, naval or safety‑critical environments is highly desirable.
  • Able to operate effectively in a high‑accountability role where safety and certification outcomes are critical.

Eligibility

This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearance.
